Artists young and old arrived in Hayfield with their canvasses, brushes and paint eager to
take part in the village's annual 'pro-loco' art competition.

The competition invites artists to produce a picture of Hayfield on the day. Blank canvasses
must be registered by 11 am and completed works returned by 3.45 pm. Children are
allowed a week beforehand to complete their pictures.

Peter Senior, a founder of the competition, and one of the three competition judges said,
"The Pro-Loco started in 1979 when a friend of mine returned from Italy with the story that
'pro loco' meant 'for the place, for the people'. Out of that conversation grew the Pro-Loco Art
Competition. It exists today in the same format but with the local children's participation
making it a hugely anticipated annual event."

The Hayfield Parish Council sponsor the event and are the custodians of what Peter Senior
described as, 'a unique art collection' which is housed in the Village Hall.

St Matthew's Church was packed by 4.00 pm when all the work went on display. The three
judges and villagers scrutinised the work and voted in categories covering under 4-year-olds
to adults. One hundred and ninety-five votes were cast.

Andrea Josephs's detailed picture of a terrace of village houses on Church Street won first
prize. Local artist Carly Grice presented the prizes. She said, "Everyone who participated
has produced their own special perspective on the Village. They provide a rich and
welcoming portrait of our lovely village.'
